These numbers are estimates for all search engines (including Google, Yahoo and MSN) that are made by extrapolating the actual number of searches done on Yahoo and factoring in Yahoo’s monthly market share. USA Cities include searches for “(city) lawyer/s” and “(city) attorney/s”. Canadian cities include searches for “(city) lawyer/s” and “(city) law firm/s”. The results do not include searches for specific practice areas (e.g. a search for “(city) criminal lawyer” is not included). This exclusion will mean that the estimate total is less than it should be. The results do include searches made by SEO companies and others that are made solely for the purpose of checking rankings. This inclusion will mean that the estimate total is higher than it should be. In a perfect statistical world (which this is not), those two factors would cancel each other out, producing a relatively accurate estimate. But now you know the statistical limitations (i.e. glitches), please use your discretion in deciding how you use these numbers.
